What is EDP Futures?
EDP Futures is the initial stage of the EDP program, establishing a focus on the development and fundamentals of a soccer player in an unpressured environment. The Futures program is open to soccer players from the age of 7 to 11. The aim of the program is to install a sense of enjoyment for playing soccer with a commitment to grassroots.
EDP Futures comprises of small sided games working in teams of 4v4, 5v5 and 7v7. By using these small sided games players are encouraged to take more touches of the ball which is a key stepping stone on their pathway to becoming a better soccer player. They will gradually become more comfortable with a soccer ball at their feet as well as becoming more technically skilled players. The EDP Futures program operates under both festival and league formats.

U.S. Soccer Player Development Mandates
In response to U.S. Soccer’s Player Development mandates, a number of new features have been introduced to provide a comprehensive experience during the transitional year.
EDP Futures now offers organized league play in line with U.S. Soccer mandates from U7 to U10 in addition to 5v5 Futures Festivals.
All U7-U10 age groups will now fall under the EDP Futures Leagues. For U7 (2010), teams will be split into 2 4v4 games. For U8-U10 (2009-2007) groups, teams will play 7v7.
This league will operate the same way as EDP, with teams being placed in an appropriate bracket based on geography, competitiveness, and like-minded clubs.
EDP Technical Director John Saunders commented: “The addition of league play to the EDP Futures program highlights our commitment to grassroots soccer development in an important transitional year for youth soccer. This step is one that affirms our commitment to compliance with U.S. Soccer mandates while offering developmentally-appropriate programming for players of all ages.”
