Wall Township has had a long history of being a premier soccer town at the Jersey Shore. University of Virginia Men’s Soccer Head Coach George Gelnovitch won three State Championships with Wall HS in the early 1980s. Tom Kain, the 1985 MAC Hermann Trophy winner for the top college soccer player in the country, also won three state championships with Wall HS. Fast forward to present time, and in 2019 both the boys and girls reached the High School State Championship games. The success the township has had over the years can be credited to its youth soccer club.
Established in 1966, the club has a long history of success. In its most recent years, the club created its Wall Elite program and the 2001 Boys teams Wall Elite Cosmos have been making the Wall name heard around the country. In 2018, the squad reached the USYS Eastern Regional Finals, and were NJYS State Cup Champions in 2016, 2018, and 2019. The team also was a part of the 2018-2019 USYS National League. The team was also one of the top teams year after year in the USYS National League Mid Atlantic Conference managed by EDP.
In 2018-2019, the club was one of only three clubs in the state to have multiple teams reach the finals of the NJYS NCS State Cup. That season also saw the 2008 Wall Elite Chelsea reach the final of the U11 bracket, coming up just short losing the championship game on Penalty kicks. In 2018, the club had two teams participate in the USYS Eastern Regionals with the Wall Elite Cosmos and Wall Elite Breakers 05 Boys.
Moving into the 2020-2021 season, the clubs Wall Elite program will have several teams who will participate in the USYS National League Mid Atlantic Conference managed by EDP. The 2008G Chelsea, 2007G Napoli, 2006G Atletico, 2005G Strikers, 2005B Breakers and 2003B Snipers will all participate in the Conference this season. Leading these teams are Directors of Coaching Michael Turtle and Jonathan Schmid.
Turtle started with Wall SC in 2003, and has been instrumental in the clubs rec program, in building Wall Elite and also was the coach of the Wall Cosmos winning many State Championships. Turtle holds his USSF “A” License as well as several other coaching badges, and was also an assistant coach at Division I program Rider University. With Soccer Specific Training, he has also trained many top level players, including current youth national team standouts Kenan Hot and Julian Anderson.
Jonathan Schmid came to Wall SC in 2010 after a successful playing and coaching career at Division I program Monmouth University. At Monmouth, Schmid was a captain on the 2006 team that was ranked 15th in the nation and reached the NCAA Tournament. As an assistant coach, Schmid was on the sideline for the programs historic run in 2009 which saw them rise to #5 in the nation and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. As a youth player, Schmid was a member of the USYS Regional Team and part of the National Pool. With Wall SC, he has brought the girls side of the program to new heights with the teams playing some of the most attractive soccer in the state.
Several players have moved on to excel at the collegiate level in recent years. Lauren Karabin started all 19 games for Conference Champion Monmouth University and was named All MAAC Tournament team. Sarah Gordon has started in 41 games in her first two seasons at James Madison University, and was named Second Team All-CAA and to the CAA All-Rookie team as a freshman. With a brand new turf field installed in 2015, the club has one of the top soccer specific facilities in New Jersey located in southern Monmouth County, and with a top notch coaching staff to match, the town looks to continue its long history of success in the sport.
“We understand the tradition and that keeps us focused on teaching the game, growing the Club and providing great experiences for our membership. We take pride in the fact that we have a very experienced team that is managing the Club on a day to day basis.”
