EDP Fall Kickoff NJ: Great Start for Competitive Fall Season

By Evan Unger, 08/24/20, 12:15PM EDT

This past weekend, EDP Soccer held the first event of its Fall 2020 tournament season with the EDP Fall Kickoff NJ. The first weekend of the event featured the girls brackets, and next weekend will feature the boys. The event was held at one of the premier tournament venues in the Northeast — Tuckahoe Turf Farms in Hammonton, NJ. Following health and safety protocols, each team played four games over two days as coaches and players were extremely excited to start their 2020-2021 seasonal year.

“It’s always a great experience attending EDP’s tournaments, but even more so during this current climate. They’ve done a great job continuing to provide a quality tournament experience in a safe environment. We’ll be back soon!”
— Andy Pearce, Scotch Plains Fanwood SC Director of Coaching

Innovative scheduling that included back-to-back game times also provided for important social distancing protocols and the ability for tournament operations staff to properly sanitize as needed between groups leaving and entering the facility. This also allowed for the completion of all games despite two weather delays due to lightning storms in the area.

EDP Soccer also used its new field layout for the weekend, which created extra space between fields, ensuring teams and spectators had the ability to distance themselves. To limit commingling of participants, the home teams and their supporters were positioned on one side of the field and away teams and their supporters on the other side. In addition, home teams stayed on the same field for both of their games. This technique reduced the need for team movement across the facility.

Don Rawson, EDP Executive Director of Tournaments, stated “EDP staff was especially grateful and appreciated the players, coaches and supporters who wore their face coverings and paid extra attention to social distancing throughout the weekend.”

“The most important aspect of the return to play for our club is player and family safety. EDP's protocols and guidelines allow for a safe and socially-distanced environment while still enjoying the thrilling excitement of tournament soccer. When we first started our club back in 2018, we ventured into a few “outside” tournaments, but nothing compares to the tournament structure, organization, quality and overall operation of an EDP tournament. We look forward to the remaining tournaments this year that our club will be a part of.”
