The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted all college sports and the recruiting process. Many top conferences have already delayed or suspended their upcoming seasons or are strongly considering a full shutdown. To help current college seniors, the NCAA has granted an extra year of eligibility. However, for prospective student-athletes, the road to college soccer has acquired a few more bumps.
Effective as of June 25, 2020, the NCAA suspension of all in-person recruiting for D1 sports has been extended through August 31. Beginning June 1, D1 coaches can virtually observe voluntary workouts if requested by recruits.
On the D2 level, coaches will be following a “quiet period” through July 31. If and when college campuses open, in-person recruiting is permitted on campus as long as all parties follow public health and safety guidelines.
Thankfully, the D3 level has not been impacted by any major announcements, so players can reach out directly to programs they’ve been in contact with to ask about their recruiting process.
However, for all levels, with the closure of college campuses, ‘official’ and ‘unofficial visits’ and college camps are on hold. In addition, health and safety guidelines for social distancing, reducing in-person contact, and eliminating unnecessary travel are severely limiting interaction.
All of these factors have combined to put additional pressure on the already impacted players who are desperate to find safe ways to train and compete, let alone take the next steps toward a career in college soccer.
Virtual Communication and Video is a Way Forward
The good news is that recruiting can continue virtually as coaches and prospects can still communicate over email, phone, text, and social media. Online chats and virtual calls over popular platforms such as Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet are a great way to have a face-to-face meeting. That is, if you’ve already gotten the attention of a scout or coach. A simple way for players to break through the digital clutter and immediately impress recruiters is through the power of video.
Capturing and sharing game film is a very effective training and recruiting tool. Highlight reels are a great way for players to put their best foot forward by digitally packaging their top moments and delivering their stats and accomplishments for college coaches to consider. Raw footage can be used to create your own recruiting videos or for club coaches to use for player development and training purposes.
EDP Soccer is Providing All Showcase Video Footage to College Coaches
EDP Soccer recognizes this increased need to support the recruiting efforts of our clubs’ college-bound players and strengthen their connections with our college coach partners. Therefore, we have teamed up with Next Level Video (NLV) to create a program that provides an all-access pass for College Coaches to virtually view any video footage that is captured at the EDP Showcase 2020, which being held on August 8-9 at Tuckahoe Turf Farms.
All College Coaches who have registered for the EDP Showcase tournament and other recent EDP Showcases will receive access to view the video footage. College Coaches can still register their scouts and update their contact information to ensure they receive the footage.
After the EDP Showcase, video footage will take approximately 7-10 days to process and upload, then EDP Soccer will notify College Coaches. Once delivered, EDP Soccer will also inform participating teams that the video has been provided to College Coaches so they can share it with them virtually.
