The US Youth Soccer National Championship Series Eastern Regional Championships will take place from June 27-July 2 in Barboursville, WV. Leading up to the event, EDP will be profiling several of the qualified teams and looking at their journey to this point. The next team featured in the “Road to Regionals” series is Maryland Rush Montgomery Blue 06 Coyotes (MD), which earned its Regionals berth through its performance in the US Youth Soccer National League EDP South Atlantic Club v Club Conference.
In 20 years of coaching club soccer, Maryland Rush Montgomery Blue 06 Coyotes Head Coach Alex Gould has never had a group as close as his current squad. That tight-knit bond, which was strengthened during the Coyotes’ run to the US Youth Soccer Eastern Regional Championship last year, has only grown this season with the addition of some colorful personalities.
“Every girl on the team has a nickname; some of them have two nicknames,” he said. “Many do different handshakes before the game, and when they’re in the mood they do some things after they score that are pretty funny.”
The Coyotes’ closeness has translated to an outstanding season on the pitch. The top-ranked team in Maryland, they didn’t allow a goal in US Youth Soccer National League EDP South Atlantic Club v Club Conference play. In addition to winning fall and spring league championships, MRM Blue finished first in the top division at the EDP Cup Spring tournament over Memorial Day weekend.
“After winning Regionals in 2018, our goal was to get back there and try to do it again,” Gould explained. “We’ll know in a few weeks if we’ve achieved our goal.”
Gould understands the difficult task his team faces as it tries to win the Regional title for a second straight year. However, he’s confident the Coyotes have what it takes to do exactly that.
“It’s never easy to win an event like Regionals, and winning it back-to-back is very rare,” he noted. “I know the girls are excited to defend their title. They are in a very tough group. Anyone who gets out of that group has a good chance to win the event.”
And should the MRM Blue Coyotes get out of the group and win the event, they’ll join that exclusive list of back-to-back Eastern Regional Champions.
