The NPL has been created to provide a unified national developmental platform with the highest level of competition in given geographic areas, and to elevate and change the competitive landscape of youth soccer based upon US Club Soccer's fundamental principles.
In early 2012, the EDP was invited by US Club Soccer to have its top boys and girls teams join the NPL.
The NPL extends developmental principals espoused by the U.S. Soccer Development Academy into younger age groups and additional clubs, providing a platform for long-term player development.

The culminating event each year is the NPL Champions Cup, where national championships will be awarded. The NPL Champions Cup will feature qualifiers from every NPL member program across the country in a true 'champions league' style competition.

The 2017 NPL Finals, open to 13-U through 18-U boys and girls age groups (birth years: 2004s, 2003s, 2002s, 2001s, 2000s and combined 1998/99s), will be held July 13-17 at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.
This marks the return of US Club Soccer's league-based national championship competition to Grand Park, as the 2015 NPL Finals was hosted at the impressive complex.
One of the most prestigious championships in the country, the NPL Finals features the champions of NPLs across the United States. Teams play several group games before advancing to knock-out rounds to determine the NPL national champion in every age group.
